It's the perfect solution for busy weeknights or those spontaneous culinary cravings. Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu) is a Japanese dish that consists of skewered and deep-fried foods. The term "kushikatsu" can be broken down into two parts: "kushi," which means skewer, and "katsu," which is short for "katsuretsu," meaning cutlet. In Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu), various ingredients are skewered on bamboo sticks, coated in a seasoned breadcrumb or batter, and deep-fried until golden brown. Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu) can feature a variety of ingredients, including meats like chicken, beef, or pork, as well as vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, or potatoes. Seafood like shrimp or fish can also be used. The skewered ingredients are coated in a batter or breadcrumbs before frying. The coating provides a crispy texture, which is the main characteristic of Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu). Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu) is traditionally served with a dipping sauce called "tare." Tare is a savory-sweet sauce that adds flavor to the fried skewers. The exact composition of the tare can vary, but it often includes ingredients like oyster sauce, sake, mirin (sweet rice wine), sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Take a look at our Deep-Fried Satay (Kushikatsu) recipe that's easy to follow.
Cut the chicken breast into roughly 2x2 cm cubes and marinate it with the Marinade Ingredients (see the recipe) for 20 minutes.
Skewer 4-5 pieces of chicken onto skewers, just like in the photo.
Prepare the breadcrumbs and beaten eggs. Also, create another flour mixture using all-purpose flour, rice flour, pepper, baking powder, and chili powder (details in the recipe).
Start by covering the chicken in the flour mixture, then dip it into the beaten egg, and finish off with a coating of breadcrumbs. Place the prepared skewers in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Heat oil for frying. Fry the chicken until it turns golden brown and achieves a crispy texture.
Don't forget to prepare the Kushikatsu Sauce (see the recipe) and simmer it for 30 seconds.
Serve the Kushikatsu with the sauce and warm rice, or enjoy it as a delightful afternoon snack.
